Roof questions from Hempstead homeowners
Most questions fall into four groups: what to do first after a storm, how the inspection works, what the Nassau County licence means, and how the price and the insurance side are handled.
- Nor'easter and storm damage
- Nassau County roofs
- Roof repair and replacement

The first few days after a storm
What should I do first when I see a stain?
Protect the room, photograph the stain with the date and call. Do not climb onto a wet roof.
Should I remove the damaged shingles?
Not before the roofer has seen them, unless they are needed to stop more water getting in. Keep any damaged material where it can be kept safely.
Can I use a tarp myself?
Do not climb onto a wet or damaged roof to fit one. A roofer can fit a tarp safely and record it.
What if the ceiling is bulging?
Keep people and pets out of the room, move valuables and call at once. A bulging ceiling needs a quick check.
The inspection and the note
What happens on the first visit?
The roofer checks the roof, the flashing, the gutters and the attic, follows the water route and writes a dated note with the findings and the plan.
Why is the attic checked?
Water from a leak runs along the decking before it shows, and the attic is where ice dams begin. The attic check finds both.
Will I get a written note?
Yes. Every visit ends with a dated note of the findings, the repairs and the parts to watch.
The licence and who does the work
Who does the roof work?
An independent local company does the work, and its roofer is sent to the property. The About page explains the arrangement.
How do I check the licence?
Ask for the Nassau County home-improvement licence number and check it with the Office of Consumer Affairs before the contract is signed.
Does a roofing licence apply in New York City?
New York City runs its own licensing, and the Nassau County statement does not cover it. The phone team confirms the rules for an address near the city line.
Price, insurance and the follow-up
Can I get a price over the phone?
The phone team can explain what affects the cost, but a figure before the inspection would be a guess. The price is confirmed on site.
Will my insurer pay?
Your insurer and your policy decide what is covered. The roofer's photographs and report are the evidence the insurer will look at.
What about a maintenance check?
A check before winter and after storms is a sensible plan, and the note from each visit is kept as the roof's record.
